Long Tailed Shrike(नकल्या खाटीक)

हा नेरळ मध्ये दिसलेला आणखी एक पक्षी. गवताच्या लांबलचक पात्याला धरून, किंवा छोट्या/काटेरी झुडपाच्या फांद्यांवर बसलेला आढळला. पूर्वी मी याला बघितले होते. आमच्या कोकणातल्या घराजवळ हा राहतो आणि नियमितपणे तिथे दिसतो. दिसायला अतिशय रुबाबदार असतो. याचे वास्तव्य साधारण कोरड्या शेतात, scrub land मध्ये असते. डोके आणि पाठीचा काही भाग राखी, तर पंखांच्या जवळील पोटाचा भाग तांबूस असतो. एखाद्या सुपरहिरोसारखा डोळ्याच्या भोवती काळा पट्टा असतो. शेपटी लांब आणि काळी असते. साधारण २५सेमी लांबीचा हा पक्षी असतो. हा dimorphic नसतो(नर, मादी सारखेच दिसतात)

 

हा पक्षी लॅनिडी (Lanidae) कुळातील असून त्याचे शास्त्रीय नाव Lanius collurio (लॅनियस कोलुरिओ) आहे. याला Rufous Backed Shrike असेही म्हणतात. त्याच्या पाठीवरील पंखांच्या कडा तांबूस असतात. माश्या, कीटक, टोळ, गांडुळं, किडे हे याचे प्रमुख अन्न आहे.

 

मार्च ते जून हा याच्या विणीचा काळ आहे. झाडावर खोलगट घरटे बांधतो. या पक्ष्याच्या घरट्यात इतर cuckoo कुळातील पक्षी ( Clamator jacobinus, Cuculus canorus) अंडी घालतात. मादी तीन ते सहा अंडी घालते. अंडी करडट हिरवट रंगाची असून त्यावर टिपके असतात. 

 

मुघल काळात या पक्ष्याला शिकार करण्यासाठी शिकवले जात असे. असा उल्लेख सतीश पांडे यांच्या 'Birds of western ghats, konkan and Malabar'  या पुस्तकात आढळतो. या पक्ष्यामध्ये वेगवेगळ्या भक्ष्याची शिकार करण्याची वाटून घेतलेली वृत्ती दिसून आली आहे. त्यानुसार यातील काही पक्षी फक्त गांडुळं, किडे तर काही फक्त उंदीर, सरडे असे भक्ष्य पकडताना दिसतात. एकाच भागात राहणाऱ्या या पक्ष्यांमध्ये अन्नस्रोत  विभागून घेतला जातो.

हा पक्षी देखील आकाशदर्शन कार्यक्रमाच्या दुसऱ्या दिवशी सकाळी परतत असताना दिसला होता. 

तसा हा पक्षी अगदीच दुर्मिळ नाही. पूर्वी मी तो मध्यप्रदेश मध्ये दोनदा पहिला होता. गावकुसाबाहेर शेतात, रस्त्याकडेच्या गवताळ भागात कुठेतरी तारेवर बसलेला असा हा पक्षी दिसतो. त्याच्या निळ्या पंखांनी लक्ष वेधून घेतो. उडत असला तर विशेषच. पण याचा आवाज अतिशय कर्कश कावळ्यासारखा आहे. या पक्ष्याच्या सुंदर दिसण्यावरून आणि कर्कश आवाजावरून एक जातककथा आहे. उत्तर/मध्य प्रदेशात हा पक्षी विष्णूचे रूप मानला जातो. एकदा दुलादेव मंदिराच्या बाहेर हा पक्षी दिसला असता तिथल्या संरक्षकाने त्याला बघून नीलकंठ पक्ष्यावर दोन सुंदर ओळी देखील चटकन म्हटल्या! 

असा हा नीलकंठ पक्षी. 

शास्त्रीय नाव Coracias benghalensis (कोरॅसिआस बेंगालेन्सिस)आहे. दक्खन, मलबार, पश्चिम घाट (१००० m) या भागात हा पक्षी दिसतो. कोकणामध्ये  ऑक्टोबर ते मार्च दिसतो. साधारण ३० सेमी लांबीचा असतो. हा Coracidae (कोरॅसिडी) या कुळातील पक्षी आहे, या कुळातले परदेशी नीलकंठ, European Roller (उन्हाळी पाहुणा), Oriental Broad-billed Roller (कृष्णचाष) असे पक्षी त्याचे भावबंधू म्हणता येतील. झाडावर, शेतात त्याची निवासस्थाने असतात. झाडामध्ये असलेल्या ढोलीत, पडीक भिंतींच्या ढोलीत, साधारण उंचीवर हा घरटे करतो. फेब्रुवारी ते जुलै हा त्याच्या विणीचा काळ असतो. गवताच्या काड्या, पाचोळा, पिसं अशापासून बनवलेले हे घरटे असते. मादी तीन ते चार अंडी देते. अंडी पांढरी, चकचकीत असतात. हा पक्षी किडे, कीटक, टोळ, सरडे, शेतातील छोटे उंदीर अन्न म्हणून खातो. 

'नीलकंठ तुम नीले रहियो, दूध-भात का भोजन करियो, हमरी बात राम से कहियो'  अशी उक्ती उत्तर प्रदेश, मध्य प्रदेशमध्ये सर्वश्रुत आहे. दसऱ्याला हा पक्षी नजरेस पडला तर अतिशय शुभ मानले जाते. पण काही बिनडोक लोकांमुळे दर दसऱ्याला नीलकंठ पक्ष्यांना पकडून त्यांची पूजा करतात आणि या बंदीवासात अनेक पक्षी मरुनही जातात.

आकाशदर्शनाच्या कार्यक्रमाच्या दुसऱ्या दिवशी सकाळी परत येत असताना हा पक्षी दिसला. पूर्वी कधीही पाहिलेला नसल्याने फोटो घेतले आणि त्याची ओळख काढली. हा आहे Black Winged Kite(Black shouldered kite) (कापशी). संस्कृत मध्ये कुमुद किंवा शबलिका असेही म्हणतात.

लाल डोळे, राखाडी पाठ आणि पंख आणि काळे खांदे. उडताना पंखांची प्रार्थमिक उड्डाण पिसे काळी असतात. 

बाकी डोके, मान, गळा आणि पोट पांढरे शुभ्र असते. पाय पिवळसर असतात.

शास्त्रीय नाव Elanus caeruleus.  साधारण फूटभर उंचीचा हा शिकारी पक्षी आहे. शिकारी पक्षी बहुदा झाडाच्या उंच डेळक्यावर बसून असतो त्याप्रमाणेच हा बसला होता. या पक्ष्यामध्ये dimorphism नाही. नर आणि मादी सारखेच दिसतात. हा पक्षी मुख्यत्वे झाडांवर, शेतांमध्ये आढळून येतो.  कोकणपट्टी, मलबार आणि पश्चिम घाटातल्या पानगळी जंगलात(Deciduous forest)  हा आढळतो. 

 

सरडे, उंदीर हे याचे प्रमुख अन्न आहे. क्वचित ससा, अन्य छोटे प्राणीही मारू शकतो. घिरट्या घालत घालत खाली येणे हे या पक्ष्याच्या उडण्याचे वैशिष्ट्य. 

मार्च ते ऑगस्ट हा याच्या विणीचा काळ असतो. मोठ्या काटक्या रचून हा पक्षी बहुतांशी मोठ्या झाडावर घरटे करतो. मादी तीन ते चार अंडी देते. अंडी फिकट पिवळसर असतात आणि त्यावर मातकट रंगाचे टिपके असतात. पिल्लाचे डोके, पंख, पाठीवरची पिसे करडट,मातकट रंगाची असतात. पिल्लू juvenile आणि subadult असताना पिसांवर पांढरे पट्टे असतात. डोळेही पूर्णपणे लालभडक असत नाहीत. 

महाभारतात या पक्ष्याचे संदर्भ सापडतात. त्याचा उल्लेख 'कुमुद' (white lily ) असा केला आहे. हा पक्षी जर डोक्यावरून उडाला तर ते राजपद लाभण्याचे लक्षण मानले जाई. असे सतीश पांडे यांच्या 'Birds of western ghats, kokan and malabar' या पुस्तकात दिले आहे.

Common Kingfisher and behaviour of birds

I spotted 'Common Kingfisher' today. I have seen this very small beautiful kingfisher (although as the name suggests, looks like it is 'common'...well not for me!) for the first time in my life. I have seen the white throated kingfisher n number of times. But never this species. So today was that lucky day. The way this little bird sits is amazing. Almost like a statue. If it is perched on a branch that's far and bushy, you will probably never be able to spot this little guy. He sits without any movement (but is too attentive towards the prey) and once the prey spotted, he shoots in that direction with a speed probably in a blink of an eye! Such an amazing bird. Lately I have this wish to read and know everything about the birds that I saw which made a great impression on my mind. 

Paradise Flycatcher, Kingfishers, Tickell's blue flycatcher, Painted storks, Peregrine falcon, Herons. even the most common like egrets..The list is never ending.

I saw so many birds today including the common Kingfisher!

And saw that the birds fight over the best feeding locations. Saw little egret doing that. He chased the other little egret for almost the time till the other one finally gave up and went far away.

Red Breasted Merganser

Today, I had gone to see a special bird with my friend and fellow birder. She had informed me about this bird called 'Red Breasted Merganser' a beautiful diving duck that has come from very far away up north. Red Breasted Merganser is a fastest duck (flies about 100 mph ) and found in colder regions and in large lakes, rivers and oceans. It prefers salty water. It feeds itself by diving under water and catching fish, insects, tadpoles. 

With the help of a local birder who frequented to the Vasai East lakes area, we were able to catch glimpses of this beauty. It was a female Red Breasted Merganser and all by herself. This bird is seen for the first time in India, and not a common migratory to Indian region,  She must have lost her way. While it was great opportunity to see her for a long time, diving in water and feeding herself and also preening and flying. I felt so sad that she is all alone from her flock and far away from her home land in a region totally unknown to her. Hope she finds her way back home, reunites with her flock and gets back to home safe!

Little Egret, Purple Rumped Sunbird, Barbet and Warbler

Today morning while walking on the road of the birding spot, I heard the familiar puk-puk-puk sound of the Coppersmith Barbet. Tried to spot him, and he was just on the branch at the top of my head. 

I observed an interesting behavior of Barbet. He was doing that 'puk-puk-puk' sound and his entire little body was shaking with that sound. Then he stopped for some time and stared again. Was this call for a partner? don't know. Both Male and Female Barbets make the same sound. After making that sound for few more time, he suddenly flew to the tree on my left hand side. I could not see properly but there was another Barbet there. And they flew frantically, almost as if they were fighting and our guy flew back to where he was again. Was that other guy also Male Barbet? Don't have a clew. Our guy was back to the tree on my right side(where he perched on the branch earlier) and he did frantic movements of neck (मान वेळावून इकडेतिकडे बघत होता) and then rested for a while and again flew. But now he went far away beyond my sight.

Spotted a few Warblers, but they are so shy and always keep jumping from one bush to other that its almost impossible to get a photograph of them. Still tried a got some photos of a distant Warbler.

There was one nearby, but as soon as I tried to capture him, he went deep into the bushes never to be seen again.  

Sighted a Purple Rumped Sunbird Male and Purple Sunbird Female at a far distance. 

While coming back, sighted a resident Little Egret which stays nearby the small pond and finds food by fishing in the pond. I have seen him many times before from the window of the home, But today I caught a sight of him nearby.

Indian Grey Hornbill

Today, could not go out as I was not well. But I could hear a distinct call of Indian Grey Hornbill so went near the window. There was a pair of Grey Hornbills which one by one flew from Mangrove tree to a far away tree on the hill side. One sat on the branch while the other vanished in trees beyond it. This Grey Hornbill I could immediately spot with binoculars. Tried to click his photo but it was not very clear picture. Also, as it always happen the crows gather around Hornbills and gang him up and shoo him off the place. This time also, they were sitting closer to Hornbill and watching him and crowing until finally the Hornbill flew away and joined his partner deep in the bushes towards the hills.
